“Personal” Computer

Neglect seems to be a constant with this site and my posting to it. So it’s fitting that this computer that I made for myself, which has been running successfully for almost 3 years, should go onto the site now.

I wanted something unique with a Japanese aesthetic. I took some scraps of cherry, maple, plexiglas and heavy bond paper to make Shoji screen doors. Ash was used for the main box frame. I cnc’d a thin piece of sapele to make a vent for the bottom and cherry strips in a Senbon-koushi style Kumiko for the top vent. Final thing is a front piece of cherry cnc’d with a tree and what is supposed to say carpenter in Japanese, backed with sapele for contrast.

Back in the Saddle

In the short time (geologically) that I’ve neglected this blog you’ll be pleased to know that I haven’t been a total slug. I’ll try and catch up over the next few posts.

Looking back at my first post this is a view of the area that contains the mower, blower, chainsaw, rakes, shovels and other yard tools.0319161035a_HDR.jpg

The shelf (corner) and shelving unit removed and set aside to be reconfigured for something else.2016-04-03 14.36.36.jpg

Swept out and things set in place (largely).2016-04-03 16.24.09.jpg

This still left me with an unappealing jumble of tools standing in the corner. I ran across this on the internet and got an idea.f9465291d66b481da82b6b7d2db7ae34.jpg

First looking at the space in the corner, I took all the tools and got an efficient layout.2017-08-30 20.00.17 - Copy.jpg

When that was done I put the plywood on the wall and transferred the layout and used some scrap pvc to make holders for the tools.2017-09-02 11.00.29 - Copy.jpg

With the first part done I could move on to the really cool part. I went to amazon and found the parts needed to hang a sliding barn door. I built a 3′ panel to go with the 6′ track I bought.

Then it was just a matter of adding tools to the panel.2017-09-02 17.01.15 - Copy.jpg

Filling in with the things that should be in the same area.2017-09-04 18.40.42.jpgThe dolly underneath has two totes containing bungee cords, ratchet straps and other car related stuff.2017-09-04 18.40.54.jpg

A place to put the laptop when I need it in the shop. There is a water-cooler now where the golf clubs are in this picture. I’ll show what happened to the clubs in the future.2017-08-19 14.26.52 - Copy.jpg

The finished (as if anything is ever finished) space. 2017-09-04 18.40.19.jpg

I can get my truck in here now if I ever need to.

Hello, Anyone Here?

Hi, I’m still alive. I have actually done a few things over the summer, as you’ll soon see.

This is the office I added to the interior of my shop. Really a home for all the books I own. It’s insulated so a window A/C unit and dehumidifier keep things from getting ruined.

It’s a catch all for the things that my wife doesn’t allow in the house.

Much of the crap from the pictures is now in the trash. This is a great place to keep the books that I don’t have space for in the house. I could also use it as a quiet room to record a podcast or add voice overs to the videos I plan to start making. More on that later.

Progress

Okay it’s been a few weeks since my last post and I haven’t been totally slacking in that time and here is some proof.
I’ve reconfigured the sink area from this disaster:2016-04-10 14.03.072016-04-10 14.03.44
to this:2016-04-24 16.34.192016-04-24 16.34.34
Still no real drain but the whole thing isn’t going to fall over. I took an old door (I still have two more by the way) and turned it into a table with a cut out for the sink.

Continuing the mowers new home. I added some shelves to handle some of the totes that were taking up space on a different shelf (Which will hopefully be moved to a new home not on my property).2016-04-24 16.35.10 Below that I put a cabinet that to hold any car/mower related stuff.2016-04-24 16.34.57
By moving some of the totes and getting the lime and fertilizer ready for a move into the actual yard gave me an opportunity to put two fixtures that I made for the bed of my truck onto the shelving unit and do what I designed them for.2016-04-24 15.00.16 The first one (third shelf from bottom) sits on the driver side and is where my main tool belt items go in the front and also holds my Dewalt miter saw stand, level and saw horses.2016-04-24 16.35.50Miter stand holder
The other one (bottom shelf) covers two drawers and allows me to store milk crates with various stuff. The way I’m now able to store theses I can easily load them into my truck and use them. Strange concept but I’m warming to it.2016-04-24 16.36.03
We’ll finish on the entertainment area.2016-04-24 16.36.41 I put Pop’s old stereo to work. This thing has been on it’s last leg forever but it’s still kicking.
I’ll be back at it Saturday.
Peace

Spring Break is…..Over!

Okay I’m back. After a couple weeks (Easter and a very hectic time at work) I got back to the clean up project. From this:0319161035a_HDR
To this:2016-04-03 14.36.36
To this:2016-04-03 16.24.09
I came to the realization that a bucket of random screws and nails would always be a waste of space. So in the trash they go. Along with the other crap I was holding on to for no real reason, two 50 pound concrete door stops (formerly fast setting bags), old window screens!?!. Hard work pays off:2016-04-03 14.36.25
I have an idea for storage in the corner by the door using rolling overhead brackets or actually a home made version there of but more on that next time.
Peace

Get Back to Work!

With so many actual house projects that need to be done (post on this coming soon) I did what many people would do, started something else. I have a workshop that is nearly 1200 square feet and has fallen into disrepair.

Looking at the table saw.
Looking at the table saw. It’s there trust me.
This doesn’t happen overnight it’s a few years of neglect. Move enough stuff around to do a project then forget about it for two months, rinse and repeat. So I’ll be throwing out what is trash (the majority of it). Rearranging some of the tables, tools and storage. Fixing some of the exterior problems.
Looking past the table saw toward the main door where a vehicle might park....theoretically.
Looking past the table saw toward the main door where a vehicle might park….theoretically.
I began with the low hanging fruit which means the stuff on the floor. An artificial Christmas Tree, a broken drafting table, two bent bike frames were the largest items. A dumpster would be very helpful but without one I’ll make our roll out garbage can work, and work hard. I plan on putting my hands on everything I have, in the cabinets, boxes, tools, everything. If it doesn’t work, it goes. If I don’t need it, it goes. If I haven’t needed it in the last two years it’s gone. ENOUGH ALREADY. Life is too short to be cluttered with all the crap we accumulate. 0319161035a_HDR
